This painting was suggested by the song of the same name by Carly Simon.  

It was the music that first put the idea into my head, but when I listened to the words, a delicious irony suggested itself.

Not an anti-war painting as such; rather a reminder that no matter what humanity may inflict on itself,

there will always be greater and more enduring things than our costly struggles for earthly power.

But as the tombstone reminds us, St John the Divine puts it much better than I ever could.
